Triad Biosummer
This summer twenty-five
high school students from across Forsyth County will come together at Wake Forest University for the 6th annual Triad
BioSummer Program, a two week experience where they will learn advanced laboratory techniques, participate in inquiry-based
science experiments and meet professionals working in all aspects of the biotechnology profession . They will also enjoy a three-day residency at WFU to experience life on a college campus.
In the second week of
their program, the high school students will also mentor 20 middle school students from across Forsyth
County who are participating in Triad BioSummer’s one-week middle
school program. The middle school program is structured similarly to the high school program, but with more age-appropriate
activities.
Biosummer 2008
Day 1: We completed a lab safety
activity and proceeded to a DNA extraction lab in the morning. In the afternoon we listened to an introduction to
a "Bacterial Transformation" lab. Later, we prepared plates for the lab.
Day 2: We toured the Human
Genomics Center in the morning. Led by Doctors Tim Howard and Greg Hawkins, the incorporated questions increased our knowledge
about DNA and Genomes. The afternoon lab, "Genetically Modified Foods" tied to the morning's tour.
Day 3: We worked furthur with
the "Bacterial Transformation" Lab, including more in-depth proceedures. Later we toured the Institute for Regenerative
Medicine and got to see the innovative cell printer.
Day 4: We continued the "Genetically
Modified Foods" lab and later took a tour of WFU along with having an information session in which we could ask questions
about the university as well as college in general.
Day 5: We finished the "Bacterial
Transformation" Lab, seeing the glowing products of the group's generally great results. In the afternoon we visited
the WFU PA Program, a hands on site where students got to participate in activities in the field.
Day 6: With a visit to Targacept,
we learned about the business and pharmaceutical aspects of biotechnology. Later, that afternoon, we went to Forsyth Tech
and were informed about their bio and nano technology programs.
Day 7: This morning we checked
into the dorms and heard a speech about the Micro Angel Fund, presented by Tim Janke. Later we worked on our presentations.
Day 8: We had an effective presentaion
on bioethics, then we continued to work on our own presentations.
Day 9: In the morning, BioBus
came and they showed us an example of a lab they might perform on their bus, which was really interesting. Later
in the afternoon, the middle school and high school students enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria. We later finished working on
our presentations.
Day 10: Family, Friends, and
our sponsors came to watch our presentations about the different aspects of biotechnology.
